The humble Saxa salt. Every Baba seemed to have Saxa salt in her kitchen, usually in between the jar of roasted peppers, and a bowl of sliced cucumber and vinegar on ice. Ready to over-salt the already over-cooked pork at any minute. This beautiful ceramic piece first started out as a painting of my Baba and Dedo’s kitchen in country Victoria. The family moved over from Macedonia in the late 60’s when my dad was just a small boy. If you’re not familiar with my work… I spent 3 years painting the seemingly insignificant corners of mess in people’s homes as a way to create indirect portraits of these people. The brands we buy and the items we choose to keep say a lot about someone's beliefs and personality. This ceramic piece was a result of wanting to pull out some of those items from my paintings.
