This year TRAILS finalists included artists from across Australia. The works reflected a range of media, techniques and experience, providing viewers with a broad spectrum from which to cast their People's Choice vote.
‘Vespa’ is made from recycled and repurposed cardboard and draws on themes of consumerism and materialism in our disposable society, while invoking a feeling of nostalgia. In experiencing the work firsthand, I hope the viewer will reconnect and remember with a sense of childlike delight their own experiences playing with a cardboard box as a child.
I’m inviting the viewer to appreciate the work in different ways, firstly to enjoy the detailed building of the object, and secondly the illusionary experience of the physical presence of a well-known object made with a material most people think of as light, weak, and only meant to be used as a container and then thoughtlessly discarded.
I want my creative visions to speak for themselves, it’s my ideas that matter, my pieces are made from a material that most throw away, this lets my design take center stage, beyond the glitz and glamour of fine materials.
